The Winery Svishtov

In the year 45 A.D. the Romans founded from Legio VIII. Augusta founded the ancient city of Nove, where today the city of Svishtov is located. The Romans chose the southernmost part of the Danube for its good location and favorable climatic conditions. Wine was an important part of life in Nove. The Romans contributed a lot to the development of wine culture, not only in the region, but in the whole of Europe.

Twenty centuries later, the Svishtov Winery, as a follower of old wine traditions, and with a great passion for winemaking, is a producer of wines that bear the specific character of the vineyards on the southern slope of the Danube.
In modern times the first vineyards were planted in 1950-1960. These vineyards cover two of the most fertile areas in the region of Gorchivka and Sovata on an area of 400 hectares.

The Svishtov vineyards

The total area of the vines currently covers 400 hectares, of which 230 hectares are fertile. The Sovata area and other areas of Gorchivka are currently being planted with new varieties. Meanwhile, Vinprom Svishtov has expanded its own vineyards of about 4,000 hectares in the Svishtov area, which have been popular for wine production since ancient times due to the favorable climate and soil. The range of varieties and products includes the following excellent wines - grape varieties:

- red wines of the varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Gamza and Storgozia.

- White wines of the following varieties: Chardonnay, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Riesling and Kaylshki Eisket.

Svishtovs Viticulture

A Roman phrase says:
Bonum vinum laetificat cor hominis - Good wine delights the heart of a person.

The ancient Romans played an important role in the development of wine culture. They regarded wine as a daily necessity and they "democratized" it - and made it available to all high-ranking nobles, even to slaves and farmers. It led to the spread of wine culture throughout the Roman Empire. Many of the principles and techniques developed in Roman times can be found in modern winemaking processes.

Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, was revered and highly respected. An interesting historical fact that confirms the great importance of wine for the Romans.

When Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it had a devastating effect on Roman wine production. This region was once one of the largest and most important wine regions. The vineyards in the region were destroyed, as were warehouses where the wines of the 1978 season were stored, resulting in a dramatic shortage of wine. In the meantime, destruction of the commercial port prevented the delivery of wine from other provinces. The prices of the available wines rose sharply and became inaccessible except to the richest Romans. Wine shortages caused panic among the Romans, and they rushed to plant vineyards in the vicinity of Rome and even to clear cereal fields in order to obtain enough land. These efforts helped to quickly remedy the shortage of wine, but soon this led to a reversal - with surplus quantities of wine and shortage of grain for the Roman population.

From Nové to the city of Svishtov

In the year 45 A.D. the Romans built from Legio VIII. Augusta built a military bivouac (Novae) 4 km east of the present town of Svishtov. It was a part of the defensive belt along the Danube, known as the Danube limes, which was used to protect the then Roman province of Lower Misia from the invasions of tribes attacking from the north. In 70 AD, the Emperor Vespasian sent the Legio I Italica, which has remained there for almost four centuries.

Nove became an important military, urban and religious center despite all the incessant invasions of the barbarians. Its importance is confirmed by the visits of three emperors: Trajan, Hadrian and Caracalla. It is also believed that Emperor Maximin Trax was born in Nove.

Wine was once an important part of life in Nove. This fact is proved by the many artifacts as pictures of Bacchus, wine vessels and stone reliefs.
